NEPTUNE KING - THE GREATEST DETECTIVE SINCE
                                               SHERLOCK HOLMES!
OVERVIEW:  The Neptune King books are a detective series set in London in the 1960's, back when detectives still had to rely on their brains rather than forensics.  Neptune King is a 26 year old shy, unassuming, nondescript ex Oxford Professor with a secret desire to be a detective just like Sherlock Holmes. When his aunt dies and leaves him her fortune, he finally has the opportunity to follow his dream. He starts his own detective agency and hires a hunky extremely handsome 21 year old Australian called Shark Johnson - a young man with a checkered past, a variety of experience, and with a penchant for a pretty face. Neither are experienced in police work but both are keen to learn on the job. As business improves, Shark convinces him to hire a secretary - a big step for Neptune as he is extremely shy around women. He's also worried that if he hires someone attractive, Shark won't be able to concentrate on his job. Rejecting one applicant after another, he finally settles on a young woman fresh from the country - an ex farm girl who recently completed a secretarial course and on her own after the death of her parents and the loss of their farm and desperately in need of a job. That she looks rather plain and unfashionable is in her favor as Neptune doesn't feel threatened by her and hires her on the spot - little realizing that this decision will change his life. The three of them, Neptune, Shark and Rachel soon become firm friends and an unbeatable team solving cases from the simple to the extraordinary. From finding a missing goat to stopping a cannibal who is terrorizing London. As their experience grows, so does their reputation as super sleuths.
Start with the first book, Introducing Neptune King and follow their progress from beginners to experts; become a part of their lives, their loves, their triumphs and their failures. There has never been a more lovable trio of characters. Every book has one thing in common, they leave you feeling good and eager to move on to the next adventure.

REVIEW: 5/5: A surprisingly good and addictive read this one. Bring on Shark and Neptune. November 15, 2013 By Hollobrain
A surprisingly good and addictive read this one. I bought it looking for something new to read and to my surprise I loved it. This author has a real talent for characterization and brings them to life on the page. You just can't help falling for Neptune, Shark and Rachel as the 3 beginners in crime detection work together to form a successful detective Agency. Neptune's an ex oxford professor with a talent for deduction. Shark is an ex biker, ex hardcase and one hundred percent Australian hunk, while Rachel goes from being a gauche country bumpkin to a swish city slicker. As they become more confident in their work, they become closer as friends and Neptune discovers Rachel's assets - her red hair and big green eyes. This is a serial. This is the first in the series and I am definitely going to buy more. I'm hooked.
5/5: A rival for Sherlock Holmes! November 16, 2013 by Cat Sinclair
Neptune King's the new detective in town and he's a rival for Sherlock Holmes. He practices the art of detection and his goal is to be better than Holmes. After solving the murder of a fellow professor, he comes into an inheritance and decides to quit teaching and start his own detective agency. His observation and deductive skills come in use, while his off-sider, Australian, Shark Johnson brings his courage and strength to the mix and the secretary Rachel, proves she's no slouch when it comes to detecting either. I loved these characters and I loved the stories. The winning recipe in this book is the characters and the writer's ability to bring them to life. They feel like real people and you're soon tuning in for the next episode in this detective serial soap opera. Got the next book on order already.

Book 1: Introducing Neptune King

502 Pages
This is the first book in the Neptune King series set in London in the 1960’s. Neptune is a shy, introverted young Oxford professor who has always had difficulty fitting in. First as an under aged university student, then as the youngest professor on campus. His only solace is in his dream to become a detective as good as if not better than Sherlock Holmes. When Professor Muggins is found at the foot of the stairs with his neck broken, everyone assumes it is an accident. Neptune believes otherwise and sets out to find the murderer. Successful in proving his case, his day gets even better when he learns he is his wealthy aunt’s beneficiary. Now having enough money to take a risk, he quits teaching and starts his own detective agency. He hires a young handsome Australian hunk named Shark Johnson as his assistant and is ready for business. With effort Shark finally convinces Neptune to hire a secretary, which he does reluctantly as he is rather intimidated by women. Fortunately for him one applicant is a young ex farm girl out of her depth in the big city. She seems more timid than him, so he hires her on the spot. Though different in background and temperaments the three soon become firm friends and, with each successive case, gain experience as detectives. From taxidermied stepmothers to German spies to the cut throat world of ballroom dancing, these three tackle them all with the aplomb of professionals. Delightful characters that are sure to win you over, and highly addictive. You can’t just stop at one Neptune book: once you start reading you will want to keep going.

Book 23: Neptune King and the Gallant Thief.

Picture305 pages
Neptune King and the Gallant Thief is the 23rd and latest book in the Neptune King series.
A charity function that the Kings are attending is robbed by a dozen shotgun wielding men led by a charismatic character calling himself Robin Hood. Robin makes an exception of Neptune and Rachel by not robbing them, citing their generosity to an old beggar outside the venue as his reason.
At first Neptune is disinclined to go after him, especially when he learns that Robin is actually giving the proceeds to the poor, and even has a grudging admiration for the man for his proficiency in the art of disguise. However when aspersion is cast on his reputation and comments are made that he wasn’t robbed because he was connected to Robin, he realizes he has no choice but to catch the thief for the sake of his business and reputation.
Using his own considerable skills he goes in under cover to the East End as an elderly vagrant and soon picks up some information on Robin and his gang. He also learns that Robin is perhaps not quite as altruistic as he appears, as the poor are only receiving a very small percentage of the take.
When one of Robin’s men is found dead after casting doubts about Robin’s integrity and motives, Neptune is even more determined to apprehend him. Neptune and Milo Washington (their employee in charge of insurance investigations) infiltrate Robin’s gang, while Shark, with the help of his dog, Fang, set about recovering the missing jewels. Together, they set a trap for Robin, once again showing why K & J Investigations is not a firm to messed with.

Shark would have preferred that she just telephoned him instead of coming, but she had an ulterior motive for coming in person. She insists on staying with Shark, who has misgivings about that; worried how his wife Becky will cope with Gwen's volatile moods. Meantime (for reasons of her own) Gwen hates the thought of Neptune being involved in the search for her husband, especially as he astutely deduced the reason behind her motive for coming in person, but they can't do it without Neptune's brilliance. Sparks fly between the two until Gwen comes to realize just why the Johnson clan hold Neptune in such high regard.

Book 25: The Miscellaneous Cases of Neptune King

Picture
In their first case--A Weighty Problem—they’re hired by Mrs Mabel Corpetant, a rather obese lady who believes her son and daughter-in-law are trying to kill her. While they prove that this is not the case they still end up saving her life under harrowing circumstances.
In their second case--Daylight Robbery—Richard Steele engages them to find the man who killed his pregnant wife during a supposed shop robbery gone wrong. Their solution to the crime is shocking to the extreme and although they are successful in apprehending the killer, their client becomes the ultimate victim three times over.
Their third case--The Black Rose—sees them hired by Irene Thompson to prove her brother-in-law’s innocence after being arrested for murdering his wife (her sister). It doesn’t take them long to prove his innocence despite him having the oldest motive in the world. Barry Hall and Irene are in love. His wife was in the way. Their investigation reveals that Jennifer Hall was not exactly faithful either and they are soon on the track of the real killer, the clincher being the black rose the victim had on her when she died.
Racially Motivated is the final case in this book. Chief Inspector Waller from Scotland Yard introduces them to Mrs Byron, a Negro woman whose husband he arrested some three years previously for murder. The conclusion never sat well with him, based as it was on circumstantial evidence but he had been under pressure to close it fast. Running into the lady reminded him of the case. As he couldn’t reopen the case, he brought her to K&J in the hope that they could do what he couldn’t—prove her husband innocent. While the lady is distrustful of the police and white people in general, she is somewhat reassured by Milo, their man in charge of insurance investigations. He helps to bridge the gap and point out to their new client racism works both ways. While her husband may have been victimized because of his colour, her judging Neptune and Shark on their colour is exactly the same thing and he urges her to give them a chance. They soon change her mind as it doesn’t take them long to find another more suitable suspect and set about proving his guilt and freeing her husband Jeremiah.

Meantime their arsonist is escalating. What started with simple nuisance fires and hedge fires graduated to a house fire with an incidental death, to the burning of a warehouses and the destruction of a priceless ancient Chinese Emperor’s shoulder carriage. Book 27: Neptune King and the Mysterious Monk

Picture
Neptune King and the Mysterious Monk is the 27th book in the series. They’re hired by Friar Luigi, a Capuchin monk  from a monastery in Devon. Ever since a collection of rare books, diaries and manuscripts arrived at the monastery  there  has been strange goings on in the night. Each morning they find the library in disarray; the books scattered about  or  misplaced and sometimes strange noises in the night. When they go to investigate they find nothing and no one. This  is puzzling enough, causing some of the monks to believe there is a poltergeist in their midst, but when elderly Friar  Matteo  is found dead at the foot of the stairs, his skull stove in, Friar Luigi suspects foul play.
He travels to London to enlist Neptune and Shark’s aid, which they are more than happy to offer free of charge.  Neptune  is ecstatic at this opportunity to disguise himself as a monk and go under cover in the monastery as Friar  Benedict, while  Shark backs him as a carpenter doing necessary repairs to the ancient monastery. He brings his dog  Fang along with  him, who turns out to be a great hit with the monks and useful too as they put him in the library  overnight. They have a  couple of suspects—two of the newly arrived monks, and when one of them presents the next  morning with a torn robe  and Fang has a piece of a robe in his mouth, that monk goes to the top of the list, although  Neptune has doubts as to his  guilt. When an attempt is made on Luigi’s life, they double their attempt to find the culprit  in no doubt at all that Friar  Matteo’s death was murder. A new suspect emerges after they prove he lied and Shark  telephones Neptune’s wife,  Rachel to get her to undertake a background check on him. That’s held up when Rachel  collapses and is found  unconscious in her office by Milo, one of their employees. Neptune rushes back to London to be by her side, learning that she had a very close call and that both she and the baby were at risk of dying.
With treatment Rachel improves but is ordered to rest at home and to do nothing strenuous that could put her blood pressure up until the baby is born, which much to Rachel’s dismay is not for another six months. Neptune doesn’t want to return to the case, but Rachel insists upon it. He’s a little distracted with worry and not at his best; despite that they still manage to solve a 160 year old mystery of missing Papal jewels and catch the killer but not without risk to life and limb when they’re entombed in the labyrinth of underground tunnels that start from the crypt at the monastery.
